Wintertime scathed the kingdom. Women cloaked in emerald fabric, their heads nestled against their chests, whilst men were sheltered beneath the skin of wild beasts, swords strapped to their sides. The warmest of fires froze, flames paralysed mid-dance. The young woman stood on the cusp of the oceanfront, her hair an entanglement of isabelline, colossal waves; a noiseless beacon in the centre of the storm – her fingers caressing the blue-scaled skin of her left arm. Her dress brushed the surface of the shoreline, wrinkling at the presence of the sea. Without restraint she would walk into the centre of the Dragon’s lair, deep within the ocean, and drown, suffocating against the vigorous waves of death.

Whilst her destiny was to drown in the Dragon’s clasp, she drowned daily in the stares of disgust – for who she was, for what she was. This endless prosecution led to the feverish removal of ultramarine scales, each implanted deep within her calloused skin; and she clawed at her back, her dragon wings painful when enveloped around her distorted spine. She coughed, incessantly, her lungs blackening, scorched, with the hot breath of the Dragon within.

The ocean embraced the sand, massaging out the footprints, leaving the surface smooth. Soon, without warning, she would be engulfed within it, captive beneath the surface, along with the ‘Ocean Dragon’. Sentenced for life-long imprisonment and stranded beneath the waves, the Dragon was responsible for the floating carcasses of sailors who went astray. But they were connected, each fibre of her being his.

“Come to me,” she whispered. “Come to me…

The salt-watered sea opened and the eton-blue Ocean Dragon rose from the depths of consuming waves. Her life had become a continuous amount of fleeting images, escaping into the nothingness. Yet, she knew, with complete certainty, that she would not let the Ocean Dragon escape her memory. Forever it would be imprinted, never fleeting.

“You will not leave me,” she pleaded, begged, demanded. “I will not leave you.”

And with each word spoken, soft and unbroken, she submerged into the depths of the ocean. Drowning in her destiny, not in prosecution, becoming one with the Ocean Dragon.
A contemporary issue (being different) in a 'fantasy world'.

This piece did not really turn out the way I expected, but I did have fun writing it. I hope you guys enjoy it :)

I adore your dabblings in fantasy! They are truly lovely and you have such a way with descriptive language. I love how the contemporary issues anchor the piece and make it much more than just a fantasy!
